A story by Howard Cox - is he correct ? Tell us at louis@uriah-heep.com
I see from the web page gig list the following entry is missing.
In January 1971 at the ripe old age of 18 and 4 months I attended my first Heep
gig.
I was looking forward to it so much.
I'd bought Very 'eavy in the July of 1970 whilst 17 and 10 months, just before
leaving school.
By January 1971 I was working and had to attend an Engineering training course
in England.
I was concerned that I may not be able to get back home to Wales in time for the
gig.
The course started Monday 18th Jan and finished on FRIDAY 22nd JANUARY 1971
The gig was to be held at UWIST (University of Wales Institute of Science &
Technology) at North Road in CARDIFF.
I'm 99.99999r sure the Fiday was the gig date. Pretty sure it wasn't Saturday
23rd, but may defer to someones better knowledge.
Salisbury was about to be released and the guys played many numbers from it,
together w/ a mixture of Very 'eavy tracks.
I'm not sure if Nigel Olson or Keith Baker was the drummer at the gig.(too early
for Iain Clarke) I even wrote to the band asking who he was.
I remember having a written reply from Ken, but can't remember what he said.
Funny how the mind has selective memory blanks.
However it was a very memorable night that has stayed w/ me to this day. I
also saw the July 10th gig at the Memorial Hall Barry (my home town) where they
supported Sha Na Na (can you beleive that?) The same year on September 12th I
travelled to eastern England to their gig at The Palace Theatre, Southend-on Sea. I
sat front row, right in front of Mick Box...awesome, even though I was a huge
Paul Newton fan, he being the reason I took up bass guitar.
I'm still a huge Heep fan, and still play their albums regularly on CD and vinyl, though for me their heyday was the first three albums. I know their later stuff was more successful but I think one's favourite era is where one starts off admiring the band, and for me , it was right at the beginning. I'm proud to have been there and long may they continue. Someone once said "NEVER APPROACH YOUR HEROES" and since their 3rd album I've never seen them since. Too scared, I'm happy w/ the memories, and I never want to loose that.
Sorry for the ramblings of a 50+ old geezer, but happy to put it in writing.
w/ very kind regards
Howard Cox
PS> Damn !!! Just read an entry that says the Cardiff
gig was Friday 15th January 1971. (a week before my recollections)
Now I'm beginning to have doubts about my own memory of 22nd January.
Interesting to see if anyone else remembers the actual date.
Take a tip......don't ever get old, the mind starts to go.
Cheers, Howard
