Hello again one and all ,
Well, Issue 32 is being printed as I write, and should be in the post by
this time next week. I've been having a root around the scrap books and
found a few items I hope you will find interesting . These are the scrap
books kept by Paul Newton and Micks Mom, They have really made our life so much easier , these books contain vertually every cutting ever done by anyone to do with Heep ! We are proud to look after these and it is our intention to share with you all as much as we possibly can.
Flower Power Failed 1967
Flower power failed for a short time at the Power of Two discotheque,
Lymington on Saturday, when the motto "make love - not war" was momentarily inverted and when a woman rushed onto the stage while the London based group "The Gods " were playing, and pulled out the leads on the amplifing equipment. She was escorted to the door by secuity staff.
Bouncers had ejected two men , and it was while this was was going on that a blow, aimed at a bouncer , missed him and hit the woman. Whereupon Flower Power failed altogether !
However, the incident, though sensational at the time, and particularly out
of keeping at a love in, could not ruin the beautiful peoples enjoyment of
an evening of memorable music.
When I arrived I was presented at the door with a flower and a joss stick
and waved in with the promise that it would be "a fantastic evening " In
retrospect I must say that was an understatement !
Lymington's own flower children were decked out in bells and beads. With them I experienced the sensation created by the Gods, a group tipped by recording men as likely to become the biggest success in pop music since the Beatles. "The Gods " have just been given a five year contract by MGM the longest ever given to a British group.
They arrived in Lymington after a 24 hour recording session at Pye's
studio's, making a single for release just before Christmas, but their
stupendous performance during the evening gave no hint of fatigue.
Before joining "The Gods", the boys whose average age is 19, had each been the leader of his own group. They have now been together for four months, and 70% of their numbers are their own compositions.
Their scene is that of the West Coast sound, which they claim to have
introduced into this country. A performance they gave at London's Marquee - the mecca of top clubs - received such acclaim that they were immediately offered a residency.
To discover in Lymington music of such a high standard is a rare occurence, and it was certainly appreciated. The Hammond organ played by the groups leader, Ken Hensley seemed practically to talk, and I would never have believed that the way out sounds produced were possible. Polish guitarist Joe Kordaz, who looks remarkably like John Lennon, was in great form.He refrained from distracting acrobatics and concentrated on his music. Paul Newton, whose father manages the group, used a solid bass guitar to emphasise the breathtaking beat, pulsated by drummer ,Lee Kerslake, who was the main vocalist. Ken sang many of the songs and harmonies came from Joe.
I can certainly support the opinion that this group will be the next
sensation on the British pop scene, and I hope we shall have many more
opportuntities of seeing and hearing them locally. A forthcoming tour of
Sweden will enhance their international reputation .
