The amplifers supplied where all dead, And things where looking bad untill Roberto was called in , who worked his voodoo on a dead JPM to turn it into a tone monster. Roberto is an Amp tech with a very special talent indeed..

If your in Sao Paulo and need your amp sorted get in touch with THE amp doctor at 6L6@globo.com

Both Mick and myself would like to send our thanks to the tone king Mr roberto Lasco

Our Trip to Odda
Kne and his Heep Pick !

"Friday morning I (Chod) , Kne and my father( the driver) started our trip to Odda. 2-3 minutes from the Centrum, I recognized someone on the sidewalk, "It is Phil." I said, no it couldn't be, but with a better look we saw that it was him! Kne couldn't believe this, and after we checked in at the hotel, he consistently thought he saw other members of the band, while we were shopping some candy.

We relaxed a little bit at our hotel room, before we put on our Heep shirts, and then went down to the lobby. There we made contact with the local guy that had booked them. Of him we got to know, that Phil had gone for a small walk. We also got to know that the band soon was going to the sound check. We went to the concert place, and was outside and heard them playing. Then the guy from the hotel came out, and waved us in! We looked at Lee's sound check, and after that we got backstage. But the band was busy, so it was only a quick hand shake, but we both got guitar picks from Mick "

You can see the performance as a video clip now on the RTL website at http://www.rtl.de/musik/musik_914900.php

You need to register, but thats done in a second.

My name is Dmitriy Smirnov. I'm from Odessa, Ukraine. I represent "Magic Box Association", a local organisation, which aims to help young bands/musicians from Ukraine to perform here and away. We also organise a lot of gigs of famous bands here, and different master classes.

We were lucky enough to meet "Uriah Heep" in Odessa before their concert here, and conduct an interview in their bus! We also went to their gig in the evening 28/02/2006. That was amazing!

So, the interview... We've translated it into Russian and will publish it on our website shortly (www.magic-box.od.ua). The original version is here

A GREAT LETTER FROM A FAN | FEBRUARY 17TH 2006

Hi Uriah,

Due to my Dad and my Uncle (who were fortunate to witness your
concert in India 22 years ago when I was 8 and too young), I was introduced to the only golden era of music. The age of Woodstock and the Isle of Wright, the power of Deep purple, Led Zepplin, Doors,Bob Dylan,Janis Joplin, santana and countless icons/promoters of the love generation.

I have no hunger to accquire wealth, fame or power for that matter, but if I had one wish it would be to experience the beauty of that time and I would have no more expectations or needs from life on earth. But that is obviously not possible, except when i live it in my dreams.

But on the 10th of Feb'06 in Mumbai, i got a feel of that energy radiating unobstructed from stage
.
THIS IS WHY I RESPECT YOU URIAH,FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

India is a backward country in many respects and there have been artists
who visited and delivered a mediocre performance, maybe thinking we
neanderthals wouldnt know the difference. But what they failed to understand is that music attacks the heart and trancends time, space, language, colour, even intelligence to a certain extent and all other wordly criteria. It is spiritual.

Uriah, you made my heart melt.Mick and Bernie(not avoiding the
others),what can I say.Your love for music and your attitude is unmatched.Totally down to earth and very emotional.Lee,ur tight
dude:-)awesome.Phil,you hit all the right notes and looked good in your
kurta too:-).Though understandably the highest notes(vocal-main and backin) were lowered an octave on a couple of tracks, viz: gipsy.Deep Purple did the same when they toured here.Guess time is beyond any physical control.

But this mail is not about only how good your concert was.

I mentioned earlier that I am a fan of the good ole music, but uriah-heep was never prominent on my list and was listened to very very rarely at best. How is this relevant???????

Well over the past 10 years abusing mary-jane and lsd has opened my mind and lead me to spirituality.Meditating over why I dwelled on nearly every
band except you, finally dawned on me.There was a reason.

With your permission.....

The past few years have been really difficult and family health issues and money have been very very difficult to the point of no food on the table at times, even now I still feel the monetary pinch for the two concert tickets i purchased literally at any cost.this is not due to drugs cause I am a user not abuser,if I can fine. Actually I am a live sound engineer and lecturer in the same field.

I was really depressed and almost on the point of breakdown due to
stress,then I saw Uriah-Heep in the papers.

This one concert BROUGHT ME BACK.It saved me from depression. And I am now thankful for not being too familiar with your music earlier as it would have not had the same effect as it did.For example, the Deep Purple concert was awesome no doubt but my knees didnt buckle.I have heard their songs so
many times that it was just a mind blowing concert. But Uriah connected with my soul and told me to get up and fight with love.Maybe this was the reason why Uriah had to wait to get into my book, and I think it was worth it.The glimpse into the past brought a smile on my face.My girl, who never attended
a concert in her life is now a dedicated fan and is harressing me for your cd's( I will be frank,i have downloaded Mp'3 off the net as the original cd's are very expensive in India especially on my salary).I do apologise but I cant afford the same.

All I wanted to say is thank you, firstly for bringing me back to life, and for the bond my girl n I have formed, a bond which is music, which is Uriah.

All I wish for is the band members to view my words, although its
difficult with a million mails a minute and I am just a nobody. But I would
only like them to know how they have touched our lives with their music and on many different planes.I am sure such feedback would be the reason why Uriah-Heep has been churning out melody for three decades+ and still goin
strong.

I would really appreciate it if this request is honoured.
If I ever do have the money,my girl and I would follow you all over the
world and attend all concerts. But till we hopefully hopefully hopefully see
Uriah in all its glory in India once again, Pls take care my friends I do
not know and I wish you not success(as that would be stupid)but good health and happiness always. Pls rock on and keep it real.

With Love,
Aylmer N Jackalin

P.S- I tried really hard to catch one of the pleck's thrown from stage but
missed, come back soon so I can try again :-)

RECREATING MAGIC: Uriah Heep performing at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore on Wednesday. — Photo: K. Murali Kumar

BANGALORE: "We will try to cover 35 years," was Uriah Heep's promise to all Heepsters who turned up on a chilly Bangalore evening to listen to them live after a gap of 22 years. In 1984, 300 people turned up for the concert but this time around it was ten times that number and included many that were born after 1984.

The band began with "So Tired" but showed no hint of fatigue with energy that they sustained throughout the performance. Formed in 1969, the only surviving member of the original band today is Mick Box, the lead guitarist. He was assisted by Bernie Shaw on lead vocals, Lee Kerslake on drums, Trevor Bolder on bass guitar and Phil Lanzon on the keyboard.

Playing hard and progressive rock genres, Heep had the crowd "Falling in Love" early. The band's music is not easily available in India but the number of fans who could chorus their lyrics was truly a sight to see and hear.

Fans of Deep Purple and Whitesnake didn't find it hard to place Heep's music because they are a more or less a blend of the two iconic bands. There were the numbers like "Bird of Prey", "Easy Livin'", and "Gypsy" which were all about speed guitar and powerful riffs, while "If I Had Time", a ballad with just vocals and the keyboard was more of the melodic tunes the band is famous for.

The energy of Shaw on the vocals and the absolute ease with which Box handled the lead and the acoustic guitar was the highlight of the show.

Knowing the audience may find it difficult to follow newer numbers, the band stuck to classics like "Sweet Lorraine", "July Morning", "Stealin'" and "Look At Yourself"

Feb 9, 2006 from
Hua Hin Today

Friday 17 February 2006 at BEC-Tero Hall I, Suanlum Night Bazaar. Door open 7 pm, show time 8 pm.

For when Mick Box decided to offer the vacant position to ex-Grand Prix, Praying Mantis and Stratus vocalist Bernie Shaw, it was a move that was to pay the highest dividends. Box had checked Shaw out at Stratus' farewell performance at the Marquee, on the advice of Heep and former Grand Prix tour manager Howard Menzies.

And so there was a new found optimism during 1987. Once again there was a definite feeling within the camp that here was a line-up that had a certain something about it. Things had taken an about turn behind the scenes too, as Heep had severed their old management connections the year before, linking up with the Miracle Group of Companies for business management. "I'd known the band for several years," says boss Steve Parker, "and had always been impressed by their tenacity. When the opportunity arose, I didn't need to think twice."

The history making concerts at Moscow's Olympic Stadium, where the band played to a total of 180,000 people across ten consecutive nights (following a welcoming reception that Bernie remembers as being "something like Beatlemania"), represented not just an achievement for Uriah Heep but a major breakthrough for western music in general, opening the door for the likes of the Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Status Quo and Motley Crue.

Different world, then the search for a different label
Work began on a new album in 1990 but with tours in North and South America and several festivals in Europe, the band were constantly in and out of the studio and consequently the album release was delayed. Richard Dodd (producer of Raging Silence) was unavailable, so Trevor Bolder assumed the production responsibilities. Released early in 1991, Different World.

The present line up of Mick Box, Trevor Bolder, Bernie Shaw, Phil Lanzon and Lee Kerslake spans over a third of their history and is the longest lasting of all. Mick Box may be the only ever present member but Lee Kerslake has been around for all but a couple of years, Trevor Bolder has played bass in Uriah Heep for almost three quarters of the band’s career, Shaw has been the longest serving of all the vocalists and Lanzon’s time on keyboards will by 1996 be equal to Ken Hensley’s time in the band. They work better together today than any of the previous line ups and their latest album, Sea of Light.

September 14 of 1998 "Sonic Origami" is released, a brand new album produced by Pip Wiliams. The band did a very successful tour in Europe, 45 countries were visited by the king of the road. A planned US tour in the autumn of 1999 was cancelled. Heep just carries on and in November of 1999 a new tour in Europe was done.

A reunion gig took place in London on December 7, 2001 with Ken Hensley & John Lawton. The Magicians Birthday Party was the first celebration of Heepmusic that now has turned into a Heeptradition. Heepfans come to London every year to enjoy the band and guests. In 2004 the event was held at the Astoria. November 6th 2004 the Magicians Birthday Party takes place at the Shepherds Bush. In the meantime the band looks at an extensive touring schedule, to places all over the world.

The future looks brighter than ever

Talk to Mick Box (and if you get the opportunity then do so, because he'll certainly talk back) and he'll reflect back on the history of Heep with a glint in his eye and a smile on his face (after selling millions of records he's entitled to), and like any seasoned traveller who's just returned from a momentous journey he'll, along with Lee Kerslake, Trevor Bolder and indeed, Ken Hensley, recall the highs and lows, ups and downs, with genuine affection. And you know what? They won't have regretted a single minute of it.

They've had their share of 'appy days alright, but they're not over yet, that's for sure.

They are taking music to people by heeps and bounds

Riddhi Parekh

Until this British band was formed, the name Uriah Heep was more famous as a character from the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield. Today, the name instantly brings to mind images of classic rock - long hair, torn jeans, guitar riffs et al.

The band, slated to hit Mumbai on the first day of the One Tree Music Festival on February 10, is celebrating 20 years of playing with the current line up that includes Mick Box, Lee Kerslake, Trevor Bolder and Bernie Shaw.

This isn't Uriah Heep's first show in Mumbai - they performed here in 1984. Mick Box, the only member to have been with the band, says, "There was only one bass drum in the whole of Mumbai at that time! There are many bands that might have refused to play, but we made the most of it anyway."

According to Box, what sets Uriah Heep apart from other bands of that era is that unlike Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, they have five vocalists, not one. Uriah Heep is proud of its history, "We didn't just tour the safe countries like US and Europe. I couldn't believe we were the first band to play in Russia in December 1983. We have never hesitated doing shows in non-commercial regions like the Czech Republic."

He feels that music is a very powerful medium and Heep's policy is that if people cannot come to the music, they take the music to people, hence the 48 countries of touring.

Having toured since the 1970's, Box explains how different things are today. "There have been instances of our on stage pictures being posted online even before we reach home from the venue," he says.

He also explains that Uriah Heep isn't the kind of band that simply comes and plays to an audience. "We try to make the audience a part of our show. At the end of the day, it's all about the people," he says.

Box says that it is important to not have "tunnel audio vision" and as things have moved on by leaps and bounds, he listens to all kinds of music today, ranging from Canada's Tea Party to the rock songs by the Stereophonics, and System of a Down!

So what should this generation of rockers expect this Friday? They will surely be playing the classic songs that people have loved over the years, including songs from albums like Raging Silence, Sea of Light and Sonic Origami. "Hopefully everyone will leave with a big smile on their face, we certainly will," he concludes.

We are so sorry to hear that Martin has passed away. That was a real shock. He was always a gentleman when we met him at shows and his support of Uriah Heep was fantastic. Our thoughts are with his family and may he rest in peace.
